Bowl Blanks or Turning Blanks are select segments of the tree used for the creating of bowls, vases, urns, platters and plates. Many of these blanks offer figured grain and at times can be all or part burl. Burls are the growths on the trunk or base of the tree that is caused by some kind of ditress. These growths are irregular size and shape.
Depending on the species of tree it is not uncomon to find spalting, Y’s at branching off sections of the tree limbs, burls or any other mal-formation that has occurred from a natural, fungal, or insect cause. These are the sought after treasures that produce a beautiful piece of art that you can create.
Utilizing Epoxy to fill cracks, Live Edge Voids, molds, or create Bowl Blanks has produced some of my favorite pieces.
